Our Review (9.0)
Whenever a franchise continues to deliver extremely popular and very high quality games, each new game in the series comes with quite high expectations. Call of Duty: Black Ops had some very big shoes to fill and yet it came through with flying colors. This game is very filled with exciting and varied gameplay and is both intense and intriguing. The ability to have multiplayers combined with some fascinating new features make this one of the leading Xbox 360 games available. There is also a new training mode for combat which enables the beginner to engage in the competition while avoiding the slings and arrows of the more skilled veterans. Video editing tools, zombie killings and one of the best shooter games ever made make this one to definitely check out if you haven't already done so.
This single player game is largely set during the 60s and takes you to hot spots such as Russia, Cuba and even Vietnam. You are now an elite yet covert operative and your adventures across the world begin to form various pieces to the puzzle-a puzzle that your captors are desperately scheming to put together by means of intense interrogation. Each adventure into the field is but a memory and these different missions are slowing coming together while building momentum as each intensive interrogation begins to put yet another piece of the puzzle into its rightful place.
Although it is not a very original or unique mechanic, it does give a nicely coherent context to the action while some of the stronger characters and intense moments give the storyline that much needed realistic intrigue. The vague edges of your consciousness hide important information that needs to come out into the light, while the erratic visual effects and creepy audio sounds that seep into your interrogations sometimes begin to blend into your memories of your missions which thus creates a rather uncertain tone that then plays out into very satisfying yet surprising ways.
Your flashbacks of interrogation are not within the linear flow of time which allows for your missions to cover quite a variety of both gameplay and geography. A highly dramatic breakout from a brutal prison is just one highlight while later missions focus on frontline conflicts, mountainous incursions and still some urban fires. The richly detailed environments and campaign are not without the odd technical glitch on occasion; however these few and far between moments are not very successful in hindering your thorough enjoyment of this game.
Besides just the on foot action that takes place, you also use a variety of vehicle choices to get to your objectives. Some of the action puts you in the driver's seat and while the handling of the vehicle is less than remarkable, the sheer thrill of blowing up things and speeding your way through hostile terrain makes up for it! The core gunning and running mechanics keep this game as active and exciting as ever and the variety of gameplay throughout the campaign keeps the action moving at such an intense speed that it will be odd if anyone ever finds this game to be dull.
